The
day began strangely today in that some of the boys awoke to find Razaq oiling
Mike. They later claimed, “It wasn’t what it looked like,” and “It was only one brush.“ The fact remains that there was
baby oil in the room and it was definitely applied to both bodies.
The
first visit of today was to GMSS, which is the service responsible for loads of
aspects of health and safety in the Manchester area. We were shown how to test
food toys and lighters for various dangerous parts.
This
visit also included the viewing of a scrapbook made up of photos of all the
foreign bodies found in foods that had been sent for testing. These ranged from
glass and metal in baby food to cockroaches in curries, slugs in milk and sliced
up mice in loaves of bread.
The only safety poster we saw was a 'government' one near the radiation testing area, which said
“In case of nuclear emergency, put your hands on your head, place your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye"

The
best thing about GMSS was the huge amounts of freebies that we were given, these
were
particularly useful to those among us studying environmental science, but
everyone else still took the pens and mouse mats.
This
Afternoon most people went to the Degussa plant that makes the chemicals used in
paint. The main feature of this visit was the Blue cat and the colour-blind
people saying that blue was actually red when it was obviously blue.
As
Degussa could only take 20 people, four of the boys “volunteered” to go to
the museum instead where they went around the space, sports and industry
exhibitions, which were especially interesting as they all took physics.
Tonight was the night we went to the cinema as a group. After Mr Wood attempted to get money off American Beauty (18) by asking for a discount, as we were all 17 we ended up seeing Three Kings (15) which was agreed as “Crap” by almost everyone who saw it.
