The
morning visit today was to “Manro,” a company that mainly makes the
detergent used in washing up liquids. Basically a place with lots of pipes.
The
talk was good, but after three nights, all of them awake till past two in the
morning, a lot of people found it hard to stay awake.
During
the journey back into Manchester, to the university, Mr Wood got lost, but this
was made up for by Mrs Owens confusion over how a car park works (you park in
it!)
The Lecture was easily the best visit of the week. The first half helped us to think about university and what we need to do to get a place. The second half was basically an excuse for as many huge explosions (Is homemade gunpowder illegal?) as possible. You could easily pick out the pyromaniacs, by the ones taking notes on how to make an explosion that had a shockwave that you felt several metres away.
Trying
to leave the car park, Mrs Owen had yet more trouble with the barrier; we had to
go back and forth about three times before it would open.
On
the journey back to the Youth Hostel there was a terrifying moment when, for no
apparent reason we stopped in the middle of the junction. Mrs Owen claimed,
“That’s what your meant to do”.
This evening was spent as a group at the Bowling alley, which we had great difficulty in finding. We all knew it was going to go horribly wrong when Mr Wood said 'Follow me I know where I am going'. Half an hour later both mini busses stopped at the side of the road because Mr Wood had given up !
After Miss Rogers went out to ask Mr Wood what was wrong (Bad Idea !!) the Owen mini bus departed and headed back towards the youth hostel and then found the bowling ally in about 15 minutes of leaving the hostel area for a second time. Yes Mr Wood had led us in the completely WRONG direction, the bowling ally, which took us an hour to find, was actually 15 minutes round the corner !! When we did finally get there Mr Wood turned up 15 minutes later with a believable excuse I am sure !!!!
Our group (Chris, Graham, Vikki, Mike, Rhian) were the first to fill the surface behind the lane with glasses. Who won wasn’t important (i.e. I can’t remember) but the evening was excellent despite the navigational errors !!
Before we went bowling however we had to complete a Model making task. We were given small amounts of equipment to build a model of a teacher or one of the pyromaniac at Manchester Uni. Click on the thumbnails below to see enlarged pictures !
