We met up with Dave Colloy and the other tour guides in building number 393. We got tea, coffee, biscuits and an introduction to the site. We were shown Uranium compounds in the form of powder and emerged from the building with an extra ear. Don’t ask me about the rest of the talk, it went straight over my head.
We then clambered into the mini buses and moved on to the building where they turned Uranium one into Uranium – trioxide, where we subjected to wearing big plastic shoes and hard hats. In this building we were shown how Uranium is separated from the Silicon wastage, and again from the metal oxides in some big tanks (not the army style!). In some other large tanks the Uranium – trioxide was concentrated.
Then it was lunch, we raced to the canteen, and stuffed our faces with FREE food.
Afterwards, once again Mr. Wood gave us a fine demonstration of his driving skills – kerbs beware! However this time Mrs. Owen followed suit! Then it was back on with the goggles, and into the processing department, complete with dodgy lifts and vibrating floors. Here we were shown how Uranium Dioxide was turned into pellets, 64 of these pellets are then shoved into stainless steel cans. The rest of the tour was much of the same. We said thank you and our goodbyes and then set off for the catalyst museum.
Sorry no pictures here as we were not allowed to take a camera in !!
