A BRIEF INTRODUCTION
This was the fifteenth trip to Manchester for Steyning and I believe Mrs Owen has been on all of them!
This year we stayed in the YHA (youth hostel) in Castlefield (which is in Manchester strangely enough)! Canals, Granada Studios, and The Museum of Science closely surround it. It is densely populated with industrial buildings, which is a good reason for the trip to be located here!
Teachers accompanying the visit (From Left to Right) Miss Rogers, Mr Wood and Mrs Owen
It is about 15minutes walk to the nearest cinema and 10 minutes drive to the bowling alley, unless you follow Mr Wood then you end up over the other side of Manchester (more on that later). There are a selection of Bars and restaurants surrounding the hostel.
Throughout the week we visited the following places and reports written by different groups are included later on!
British Nuclear Fuels Ltd (BNFL)
Catalyst Museum
GMSS Analytical Laboratories
Degussa – Create Prussian Blue pigment
Manro – Create key ingredients for things such as washing up liquid and shampoo!
Manchester University – For a talk on UCAS and an excellent demonstration!
As well as the visits we spent some of the evening preparing for the next day and completing a variety of ‘interesting’ quizzes. Then the evening was generally social based.
The
hostel, as well as providing our accommodation and meals, also has a games room,
inclusive of a pool table, and arcade machines, a television room, a lounge and
a teaching room (yippee)
