Our Fav’s

At Brandstar we are avid Android users, especially as we use GoogleApps the two integrate seamlessly just as you would expect from Google. But one thing Apple has got on the iPhone which is arguably better than any competitors is the App Store.  Google has its Market for Apps and we can usually find an app on there to meet our needs, some things take longer than on an iPhone but with Androids becoming ever more popular the choice of Apps on the Market is growing rapidly!

We thought we would share our top 10 favourite apps for the Google Android user … in no particular order as they are all brilliant!

1 – WhatsApp – A messaging service a bit like BBM but for Android to Blackberry to iPhone .. It is cross platform and extremely quick. Why use this instead of text? Well a few reasons .. 1- texts often cost money, 2- you need data or wifi to send a whatsapp so in those places with no signal if you have access to wifi you can still communicate. 3- you can send messages, photos, links etc and have you ever tried photo messaging over text .. You have got to have good signal!

2 – Facebook – one of those love hate relationships. We all use facebook, therefore having a good app to keep us connected to it is essential. When the first facebook app for android was released it was shocking compared to the iPhone version. Thankfully it has got much, much better.

3 – AVG Mobilation – see we can even fit our love for AVG products into Android Apps .. AVG Mobilation offers anti-virus protection for smart phones, offering features such as automatic scans, malware and content checks before downloading anything onto your device. What’s more if your phone is stolen then you can lock it and wipe all contents remotely. You can also track down your device using GPS!

4 – DropBox – Brilliant, sheer brilliance. Keeping data sync’d across multiple devices is a pain, but being able to access data on the go through your dropbox is fantastic and the dropbox app allows you to do this, nice and simple. Go and install it now! And if you don’t have dropbox sign up here.

5 – Norton Utilities – this is possibly the only time you will find us recommending a Norton program or app on this website as we aren’t fans of their Anti-Virus; however this little app is brilliant at keeping track of your phone usage. You can monitor incoming/outgoing phone calls, incoming/outgoing text messages, and your internet data usage. Maybe you have a contract which can be a bit limiting, use this to keep an eye on your spend for the month (you can send your bill date so they coincide), you could use this to check against your bill to make sure you aren’t being charged too much, or maybe you’re just a bit of a geek like us and like to see those numbers! Either way it is worth getting. It is still in beta at the moment so technically there could be problems with it .. But we haven’t found any.

6 – tweetdeck – this is really only useful if you actually use tweetdeck to update your facebook / twitter accounts .. But if you do such things we think this is the best app for that purpose!

7 – Google Docs – we have access to all our google docs through the google docs app for the android. All you need is internet access. Perfect for those times you forgot to download that document you were working on but need it for the meeting. Or if you like us, use google docs for tracking things like time-sheets and mileage records, you can update on the go.

8 – Movies by flixster – if you are a film addict then this is the app for you, check film times, watch trailers, find the closest cinema .. What more could you ask for … sorry it doesn’t provide the popcorn for you.

9 – Angry Birds – Go on, admit it, you’re addicted too …

10 – Wifi Analyzer – ok, a geeky one to end with, but this app shows all the local wireless networks, their strength and encryption status … so you can easily find a strong one to connect to!

These are our favourite apps – now let us know what yours are!
