AVG 9 – Out Now + Installation Tips
October 10, 2009 – 12:22 pm
AVG have now released their new range of anti-virus software! We’ve been impressed by AVG 9 so far and think it’s worth downloading…after all it’s essential that your computer has the most up to date virus protection available to keep it safe and secure. It’s a free upgrade for all customers!
Three main differences we’ve noticed during the installation are that:
- Scan – AVG automatically sets the computer scans to Weekly, where as in the past you had to set that manually
- Firewall Settings – In the settings you don’t have to tell it what to scan, you just advise it what type of computer you have and it’ll do it automatically for you.
- Download File – The download file is considerably larger than previous editions. It’s now 109MB compared to the 69mb before.
Key changes that AVG say they’ve made to AVG 9 are:
- Scanning times cut by up to 50%
- Boot time reduced by up to 15%
- Memory usage improved by up to 15%
- Firewall alerts/user inputs reduced by up to 50%
- Installation screens (and time) cut by 50%
- Detection of competing products and their removal made easier
- New interface simplifies and eases the process
- Cutting-edge technologies enhance anti-phishing protection
- Integrating our signature-based and behavioural technologies delivers increased detection rates
- An Anti-Rootkit feature is now available on all products, not just Internet Security
Download/Installation for Current Customers
This example will focus on AVG 9 Internet Security, however the process is very similar for all products.
- Go to the AVG Download website
- Click on your current product (e.g. AVG Internet Security)

- Click on link to open download options

- Choose to ‘Save File’ (Firefox)

- Once the file has downloaded you need to open it. Firefox users should double click on the file name in the downloads window (see below)

- Allow AVG to extract the setup files

- The first thing you need to do in the installation process is select your language

- If you agree to the license agreement place a tick in the box (by clicking in it) and then click ‘accept’

- AVG will now check the system status
- Next select your installation type. We recommend ‘Standard Installation’

- Now activate your license. Simply type in your name and your license number (this may already be in the box)

- Read the next message very carefully. We strongly advise you agree and click ‘next’ (click on image to enlarge)

- Next you must decide whether to install the AVG Toolbar or not. We prefer not to. It has been known to cause problems with internet browsers in the past and it makes it too easy to switch off a shield by accident.

- AVG will now install itself and supplementary notes. It will then run an update

- Next select your computer type and click ‘next’

- Now you need to select your Internet connection type

- AVG will finish the installation process and show you the completion screen below

- Before you do anything else save your work and close all your programs. Then restart your machine. Once your machine is restarted run an update.
We’ve been impressed so far! We’ll publish a detailed review in the next week
