Virus Protection
February 28, 2009 – 3:08 pmRecently at Brandstar we have had a larger number of clients & new clients than usual come to us with infected machines, all running some for of AntiVirus and it still got through. Needing our support to help them remove the trojans that were on the system and incurring an unexpected and unwanted cost!
So, we want to advise all clients and anyone else reading our blog here to be careful browsing the web and follow the basic steps outlined below to help keep yourself from getting infected:
- Make sure all Windows Security updates are installed (especially SP3 for XP and SP1 for Vista)
- Ensure you are running a decent Antivirus software and that it is up to date and updated regularly
- Run a virus scan weekly, more if you use the web a lot
- Don’t visit any suspicious looking websites
- If you are using AVG Internet Security make sure Active Surf-Shield and Search Shield are running
- Use Firefox rather than Internet Explorer where possible
- Don’t open attachments in emails unless you are sure they are clean, get your A/V to scan them first
- Don’t click links in attachments, if someone has sent you to a website … go and google it first and let AVG check it out for you!
- Make sure your Firewall is turned on
If you do get a virus we advise the following:
- Disconnect from the internet
- Run a full Antivirus scan
- Contact an IT consultant with the results of the scan and/or the symptoms of the virus to seek further advice.
If you are local to Brandstar and need some help, give us a call.
