Work Experience Students at Brandstar UK!

November 20, 2007 – 3:48 pm

This last week at Brandstar we have had two work experience students from one of the local collages here working with us and observing various aspects of our work as well as visiting client sites with us.

At Brandstar we beleive it is important to invest in young people so rather than just letting these guys observe us the whole week we decided to throw them in at the deep end! These guys started off with a three page test, just so we could see where they were and how much they knew, that gave us a basis on how much information we needed to give them to complete a task!

After the test they were given a bunch of networking gear and two computers and asked to make a network! No advice given to start with!

Other challenges throughout the week that they were set include installing WinXP Pro from scratch with 1 partition and then with 2 paritions, putting a computer back together and then diagnosing issue on bootup, building their own websites (more info on this later!) and various research tasks to learn more about the subjects where they had been given some practical experience, for example looking at the difference between domain and workgroup based networks.

Both guys this week had hardly used Dreamweaver at all before visiting Brandstar and to be honest what they had been taught was somewhat dissapointing so the aim wasn’t to come out with beautifully designed sites, but instead learn how to follow a design brief, how to use the different controls in Dreamweaver, how manage a site within Dreamweaver, how to use Filezilla to upload the site, site testing and even learning a little CSS. We have uploaded both sites so feel free to take a look! (Adam’s Site, Mikey’s Site)

We like to know how work experience goes and if the students found it worthwhile so we gave them the same test again and asked them to complete it, both did much better than their first attempt! Which is encouraging. We also asked them to briefly review their week with us, feel free to read what they thought! (Adam’s Review, Mikey’s Review)
