Windows Mail Error – Message Could Not Be Displayed

November 20, 2007 – 11:14 pm

The “new” version of Outlook Express in Microsoft’s latest operating systems Windows Vista renamed Windows Mail is a fantastic development from Outlook Express. However we have had a few clients coming to us with a problem and so I thought it only fair to share the solution.

Firstly the problem:

You have an email in your outbox that “Could not be displayed” and it talks about the possible low memory issues etc. Actually it is just a stuck email that you need a utility to remove.

Symptoms:

The most common symptom that we get asked is “why are all my emails getting stuck in the outbox?” or “why does no one get my emails?”. This is because the emails leave the outbox in the order they were sent to the outbox, thus if there is one stuck and emails sent subsequently will not go anywhere!

The Solution:

Firstly, if you have any emails stacking up behind the “stuck” email I suggest you transfer them to the “Drafts” folder by simply dragging them there. The reason for this is because what we are about to do is completely clear the outbox!

Once you have moved your emails that can be viewed to the drafts, download WMUtil from our website downloads area.

Close Windows Mail.

Double click on the downloaded zip file and unzip the contents to a folder on your desktop. Then run the WMUtil file. This will open a small utility which fixes a number of issues with Windows Mail should you face them at any point, but for this one you just need to click the “Clear Outbox” button. It will then tell you how many messages were removed (generally just the 1) then hit close and open up Windows Mail again!

That should have cleared your outbox. Go to the drafts you saved earlier and try sending one!

Good luck!

Update:
Microsoft have fixed the problem that was causing this, so in theory this tool should no longer be required.  Ensure that you have patched your system and if you do come across this problem instead of using this tool I would suggest you visit the Microsoft KB941090 Knowledgebase Article.
